Project Overview

Fives is a French multinational, with operations also in Italy, a leader in the production of transport systems for international logistics. In collaboration with Fives, I contributed to the development and commissioning of four transport systems for the express courier TNT: three facilities in France and one in Norway.

The project covered the entire lifecycle: PLC software development, plant startup, complete testing, fine-tuning of operating parameters, client staff training, and continuous technical support during initial production phases.

THE CHALLENGE

What the client needed

TNT Express needed automated transport systems for its sorting centres, with strict requirements in terms of speed, reliability, and project delivery times. The main challenges included:

  • Developing PLC software for high-speed sorting systems, capable of handling high parcel volumes with precision and without operational interruptions.
  • Ensuring complete commissioning of four facilities in two different countries, each with different logistics specifications and regulations.
  • Collaborating effectively with a third-party company responsible for producing supervision and performance monitoring systems.
  • Completing client staff training in tight timeframes to enable operational startup on schedule.
  • Managing fine-tuning of operating parameters under real operating conditions, optimizing system performance.
THE SOLUTION

What I delivered

My contribution covered the entire project lifecycle for all four facilities:

  • PLC software development: Programming of control logic for transport and sorting systems, with automatic flow management, parcel recognition, and routing to correct destinations.
  • Startup and commissioning: Startup and commissioning of all four facilities, with complete functional checks and performance testing under real load.
  • Testing and fine-tuning: Optimization of operational parameters under real operating conditions, with adjustment of speeds, transit times, and safety thresholds.
  • Staff training: Complete training programs for operators and maintenance technicians at each facility, with detailed technical documentation.
  • Supervision integration: Collaboration with the third-party company for integrating supervision and performance monitoring systems with the PLC software.
